WINGS
Music and lyrics by Nancy Rexford

Last night I dreamt my soul did rise,
And knocked at the gates of paradise.
King Jesus took my file and looked it through,
And said, “We don’t give wings to people like you.”

“You can’t shut the door in my face!
I’m not such a terrible case!
(what a case, what a case!)
My name’s on a pew in the church down the block,
And I bought a lot of cookies in the cookie walk."

King Jesus said, “They're both good things
     (especially the cookies)
But not enough to earn your wings.
It’s when I’m hungry and I call your name,
You’ve got to come and help, that’s the name of the game.”

“But how?
When it appears to be a given,
there's no chow in heaven!
If someone had told me cuisine was the goal
I’d have brought you up a nice casserole.”

"Remember the time you went to the mall,
To buy cool shoes and a basketball?
I was hanging around in the parking lot
But your hands were full of the stuff you bought.”

“No way! You were never there.”
“Yes, way! But you didn’t care!
I asked for a quarter to put in my cup.”
“You mean that bum? That was you dressed up

So How am I supposed to recognize
King Jesus when he’s going in disguise?
I think he ought to give me one more chance!
It’s only fair to let me know in advance.”

“But I did!
(Yes he did, yes he did)
It’s written down in the book
Of rules
      (Matthew twenty-five).
             You just gotta look!
The poor and the broken, they stand in my place
It’s the homeless bum who wears my face.”

"You mean all this time, I have had it wrong?
      (all wrong)
I thought it was enough to sing a pretty little song.
I’m doomed! And now my time is done."
But then
      (Brrring Brrring)
I heard the alarm clock rung!

Hallelujah! I’m not really dead!
I’m due at the office instead.
What a glorious morning! I heard a voice say,
"I’m giving you a chance to earn
your wings
      (flutter, flutter, flutter)
                  to-
      (flutter, flutter, flutter)
                       -day!"
